It would be nice had this been a song with a short shelf life (to use Tom Paxton’s phrase).
But now we’re looking at another potentially messy election in November of 2024, so you may want to stick this in your back pocket.

The little kids on the losing team were feelin’ kinda low;
Their game had not turned out the way they’d hoped that it would go.
Who could ever blame those kids for playin’ hard to win?
Still, by the time they’d reached the bench their smiles were back again,
And no one said the other team had cheated.
They did not claim the scorekeeper was wrong.
They did not whine that the ref was blind or biased.
In fact they did not think about their loss for very long.
‘Cause their coach would always tell them, “Kids, a game is just a game;
Win or lose, tomorrow we will wake up all the same.”
So they gave the other kids some nice high fives to say “congrats”
And invited them for cookies that their moms had brought for snacks.
Now, you might guess I’ve got some deeper meanin’ on my mind.
I’ll try not to annoy you all or take up too much time.
The folks there on the losing side are feelin’ kinda low;
The election did not turn out like they’d hoped that it would go.
But do you have to say: “the other party cheated.”?
Must you claim the votes were counted wrong?
Don’t whine officials must be blind or biased.
Despite all your frustration, shake it off that let’s move on!
I know that an election is much more than just a game,
But win or lose, tomorrow we will wake up all the same.
When the campaigns and the voting ends, it’s time to reconcile.
Don’t play the sore loser. C’mon, grow up and be a child!
Don’t play the sore loser. C’mon, grow up and be a child!
(Besides, you’ll get to vote again in just a little while!)
